Sometimes judgement is done on basis of who fits into our beliefs. Something perceived as freedom by one could be be pictured evil by another. The mind plays games. The world was never painted in pure shades of black and while, gray exists along the way too. Gray being the middle ground that leave some space for perspectives to shape and reshape over time.
Perspectives
Antagonist (noun) A character, group or force in a story that stands in direct opposition to the protagonist. Protagonist (noun) The central figure in a story, book or film. When one thinks of an antagonist, the first thought to pop up is something along the lines of “evil”, ”villain” etc. But the story can’t be that simple can it? Nothing is ever black and white, not every antagonist is pure hatred and immoral, the same way not every protagonist is righteous and kind. There exists a spectrum of grays between them, “villains” who live for a greater honour (but something went wrong along the way), heroes that have long crossed the line (“as long as I save more than I ruin, I still am the good guy, right?”). Sherlock Holmes, the beloved detective and paragon of justice, when placed under the microscope is nothing more than a disruptor, bending the rules and laws to serve a higher, maybe unconventional, justice. And Moriarty, his polar opposite, the so-called embodiment of evil, in his eyes is nothing more than a force of order, imposing logic on a chaotic and mediocre world. Everyone is a villain till the perspective shifts, everyone, the hero of their own story, serving their own morals, their own interpretation of what is right and what is wrong. Perspective changes what’s right and what’s wrong, morality is not an absolute existence but something that morphs based on the individual. More often than not, the protagonist and antagonist are bound by the same motive, be it honor, justice, survival, they see the same finality just different paths. “Where there is light, there must be shadow, where there is shadow there must be light. There is no shadow without light and no light without shadow.” Nothing is ever absolute. The question is not who is right or wrong, but which perspective we choose to believe (and how many grays we are willing to accept.)
Movie Recommendation
Where perspective changes everything ”Talvar” illustrates how perspective defines the notion of truth, making it seem believable in every version and sometimes causing uncertainty to exist as it relates to justice. Perspectives in Anime “Attack on Titan” expresses how love, loss, hatred and sacrifice shape people, proving that every hero and villain is born from perspective. These stories reveal “how the truth can completely change depending upon who’s telling the story.”
